The passing of the Universities Accord (Student Support and Other Measures) Bill in federal parliament last year was a significant moment for students. This Bill will help enhance the accessibility, dignity, equity and quality of university education for students.

Key highlights of the bill include:

  • $3 billion off HECS bills
  • Payment to teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work students on placements
  • 40% of Student Fees (SSAF) to student led associations
  • Improved accessibility for underrepresented and regional students
  • Enhanced mental health, well-being and holistic initiatives for students

From 1 January 2025, universities must allocate at least 40% of SSAF (Student Services and Amenities Fee) revenue to independent, student-led organisations like the LTSU.

Right now, La Trobe University has not confirmed how it will meet this requirement, and we’re still waiting to be told about the University’s transition plans which must be approved by the Department of Education.

This delay directly affects our ability to plan  services, activities and the student voice. This includes securing staff jobs, paying service providers, and delivering essential support to students.

We’ve met with local Councils, MPs, education Minister Jason Clare's Office and the Department of Education seeking urgent clarification. The LTSU will continue to push for transparency and proper funding for the student union that represents you.

We’ll keep you updated — your student voice matters.
